From Recipes to Livelihoods: Sheila Ahabwe is Empowering Uganda’s Next Generation of Chefs

In Uganda’s rapidly growing hospitality industry, few culinary educators have made as significant an impact on skills development as Sheila Ahabwe, an internationally qualified culinary educator, assessor and entrepreneur whose work is transforming the lives of hundreds of women and young people through professional culinary education.

As the Founder and Director of Vine Kitchen SMC Ltd, a DIT-accredited, woman-led culinary school in Kampala, Ahabwe has dedicated her career to equipping aspiring chefs with practical skills, internationally recognised qualifications and the confidence needed to build sustainable careers in the food and hospitality sector.

Driven by a passion for education and community empowerment, Ahabwe believes culinary arts can create lasting economic opportunities, especially for women and youth seeking employment, entrepreneurship and financial independence.

“I don’t just teach recipes. I teach people how to believe in themselves, develop professional skills and create opportunities that can change their lives,” Ahabwe says.

Through Vine Kitchen SMC Ltd, Ahabwe has built a respected culinary training institution focused on practical, industry-driven education. The school prepares students for careers in hotels, restaurants, catering companies and private enterprises by combining classroom learning with hands-on experience.

The institution also offers internationally recognised Highfield qualifications in culinary arts, providing students with credentials aligned with global vocational training standards and improving their opportunities both within Uganda and internationally.

Beyond cooking techniques, the training programme emphasises professionalism, food safety, entrepreneurship and customer service — essential skills in East Africa’s expanding hospitality industry.

Ahabwe’s contribution to culinary education extends beyond professional cooking. She holds internationally recognised vocational qualifications, including the CAVA/TAQA Level 3 Assessor qualification and a Level 4 Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) credential.

These qualifications enable her to assess, moderate and deliver vocational training in line with international standards.

Her expertise has positioned her not only as a chef but also as a trainer, assessor and mentor committed to improving the quality of culinary education in Uganda.

One of Ahabwe’s most notable achievements is her commitment to making professional culinary training accessible to women and young people.

Last year, she led a free culinary training programme that equipped 150 women with practical skills, professional certification and pathways into employment.

Building on that success, she is currently overseeing another initiative training 300 women, girls and youth free of charge. Several beneficiaries have secured jobs in restaurants, hotels and catering businesses, while others have started their own food enterprises.

For Ahabwe, the true measure of success is the transformation of her students’ lives.

“My greatest reward is seeing students become financially independent. When someone who once had no opportunity is now running a catering business or working confidently in a professional kitchen, that is true success,” she says.

Ahabwe has also represented Uganda on international culinary platforms, showcasing the country’s growing culinary talent and promoting Ugandan cuisine to global audiences.

Through her professional engagements, she has created opportunities for knowledge exchange with culinary educators and institutions across Africa, strengthening collaboration within the hospitality and vocational education sectors.

One of her students recently received a Rising Star Award at an international culinary platform, highlighting both the learner’s achievement and the quality of training offered through Vine Kitchen.

Away from formal training, Ahabwe operates a professional outside catering business that doubles as a practical learning environment where students gain real-world experience while undergoing training.

She is also the host of Know Your Kitchen, a food-focused podcast and educational platform where she shares culinary knowledge, cooking techniques and conversations celebrating Uganda’s diverse food culture.

Through her digital platforms under @vinekitchenug, she continues to educate audiences, inspire aspiring chefs and promote Ugandan cuisine locally and internationally.

At the heart of Sheila Ahabwe’s work is a belief that practical education can transform lives.

She believes vocational skills can help address unemployment, encourage entrepreneurship and improve livelihoods, particularly among women and young people who often face barriers to accessing professional training.

By combining internationally recognised qualifications, practical experience, mentorship and community outreach, Ahabwe continues to contribute to Uganda’s hospitality industry while shaping the next generation of culinary professionals.

With more than 450 women and youth trained through her initiatives, internationally recognised credentials and a strong commitment to excellence, Sheila Ahabwe is emerging as one of Uganda’s leading voices in culinary education and vocational skills development.
